Espen Kolstad Heen is an Assistant Professor at Østfold University College's Department of Nursing, Health and Laboratory Science, within The Faculty of Health, Welfare and Organisation. His academic focus includes iodine nutrition, neonatal health in low-income countries, and global health challenges. He holds an MD from the University of Oslo (2000), a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (2009), and an M.Phil. in International Community Health from Helsam UiO (2012).
He has extensive clinical experience in family medicine, internal medicine/geriatrics, pediatrics/neonatology, and psychiatry. His teaching spans epidemiology, micronutrition, medical ethics, and global health. He has led health development projects in Eastern Africa, focusing on curriculum development for medical and nursing education.
His research bridges methodological rigor with global health priorities, including iodine intake analysis, neonatal care in fragile states, and water quality's health implications. He has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles in journals like *Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology*, *Archives of Osteoporosis*, and *Journal of Global Health Reports*. His work emphasizes actionable insights for improving healthcare systems in resource-limited settings.
