Ernie Osburn is an Assistant Professor of Soil Microbiology at the University of Kentucky's Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. His research investigates soil microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) and their critical roles in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly how microbial communities respond to global change factors including forest management, agricultural practices, and climate disruptions.
Current projects examine natural and synthetic antimicrobial agents' effects on soil microbial communities, including bacterial predation by phages and its impact on carbon/nutrient cycling. His research aims to understand microbial components of soil food webs to predict long-term soil health under changing environmental conditions. He holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from Virginia Tech.
