Ernest Barreto is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics & Astronomy at George Mason University (GMU). He holds affiliations with the Neuroscience Program and the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. His research bridges physics, mathematics, and biology, focusing on synchronization in neural networks, nonlinear dynamics, and cognitive processing mechanisms. Barreto earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Maryland (1996), preceded by an MS (1995) and BA from the University of Chicago (1990).
His work explores topics like coupled oscillator synchronization, neuronal dynamics, and pathological conditions like epilepsy. Notable contributions include studies on inverse stochastic resonance and the dynamics of heterogeneous neural networks. He received the 2013 Outstanding Teaching Award from GMU's College of Science. His lab investigates biophysical modulation in neuronal networks and applies mathematical models to understand brain complexity.
Barreto actively participates in academic governance, serving as Department Chair and organizing colloquia. His teaching spans undergraduate physics courses and graduate-level topics in classical mechanics and statistical physics. Professional links include roles in academic policy committees and graduate education oversight at GMU.
