Erland Mårald is a Professor in the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, specifically within the Section of History of Science and Ideas at Umeå University, Sweden. His academic position is housed in the Humanisthuset building (HUM.K.130) in Umeå. As a Docent (the Swedish equivalent of Associate Professor with habilitation), he holds a significant research position within the university's humanities faculty.
Mårald's research interests focus on the historical intersections of environmental policy, forestry practices, and societal development, particularly in the Nordic context. His work bridges environmental history, history of science, and cultural studies, with special attention to how forests, climate change narratives, and energy transitions have evolved historically. He examines the cultural dimensions of resource management, exploring how different communities perceive and interact with natural environments across time.
His recent scholarly output (2023-2025) demonstrates a strong focus on Nordic energy transitions, green transformations, and historical perspectives on environmental issues. Mårald's publications reveal a consistent pattern of examining how historical contexts shape contemporary environmental challenges, particularly through analyzing forest management practices, climate change narratives, and energy policy development. His work often employs interdisciplinary approaches, combining historical analysis with insights from political ecology, cultural studies, and environmental science.
Mårald is actively involved in research projects examining Nordic energy peripheries and climate change pathways, including the 'Peripheral Visions: When global agendas meet Nordic energy peripheries' project (2022-2025) and 'Bring down the sky to the earth' project (2018-2021). His work consistently addresses the complex relationships between historical forestry practices, contemporary sustainability challenges, and future environmental pathways.
