Erja Portegijs is an Adjunct Professor and Rosalind Franklin Fellow in Human Movement Sciences at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, affiliated with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Her research focuses on promoting active and healthy aging through lifestyle interventions in clinical and community settings, integrating health sciences, environmental studies, and citizen science approaches. She uses multidisciplinary methods including device-based activity monitoring and spatial data analysis to study person-environment interactions in aging populations.
Key roles include editorial board membership for the European Review of Aging and Physical Activity, and leadership in networks like PhysAgeNet (CA20104) and the UMCG's Health In Context research institute. She leads the 'Quarter Maker' initiative for human movement and active lifestyle promotion.
Recent work emphasizes pandemic impacts on mobility (2024 studies), cohort comparisons in aging outcomes, and functional recovery post-surgery. Her research spans 130+ publications, with 2024-2025 articles highlighting physical activity determinants, walking limitations, and mortality predictors in older adults.
Awards include the 2023 HealthEquity grant and Rosalind Franklin Fellowship. She advises PhD candidates and actively participates in interdisciplinary collaborations across Europe.
