Erinanne Saffell is an Associate Teaching Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) within the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning. She also serves as the Arizona State Climatologist, Director of the Arizona State Climate Office, and Senior Global Futures Scientist at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. Her affiliations include the Urban Climate Research Center, Water Institute, and Greater Phoenix RCE (UNESCO).
Education: She holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.S. in Geography from Arizona State University.
Research & Teaching Focus: Her work centers on extreme weather/climate events, drought, urban heat island effects, and K-12 outreach. She co-founded Arizona’s only middle-school weather camp with the National Weather Service and Salt River Project. Key interests include climate adaptation, hydroclimatology, and urbanization impacts on weather patterns.
Service & Leadership: Saffell co-chairs the Arizona Drought Monitoring Technical Committee, serves on the American Meteorological Society Board of Outreach and Informal Education, and advises ASU’s Student Weather and Climate Organization. She oversees the NWS Tempe/ASU Weather Station and participates in multi-agency flood warning initiatives.
Teaching: She consistently teaches courses like Extreme Weather, Physical Geography, and Geography of Natural Resources, integrating climate science and societal impacts into curricula.
