Erin Van Zyl is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biology at Carleton University within the Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying cellular stress responses, particularly the effects of splicing inhibitors and environmental toxins on gene expression, cell cycle regulation, and metabolic pathways. She employs techniques such as flow cytometry, microarray analysis, and biochemical assays to study these processes in cancer cell lines and mouse models.
Her work explores the interplay between transcription factors like ATF4, p53, and CDK inhibitors in stress-induced signaling pathways. Key projects include investigating how CYP1A1/1A2 enzymes modulate glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion in sex-specific manners, as well as the dysregulatory effects of cisplatin on insulin pathways. She has also contributed to correcting prior cell cycle studies involving isoginkgetin, enhancing methodological rigor in splicing inhibitor research.
Van Zyl’s publications span topics from pre-mRNA splicing stress to miRNA-mediated p53 responses, reflecting her expertise in integrating genetic, biochemical, and computational approaches. Her research bridges fundamental cell biology with potential applications in pharmacology and toxicology.
