Erin Schoneveld is an Associate Professor and Chair of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Haverford College, with a secondary appointment in Visual Studies. She holds a Ph.D. and A.M. in History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania, and an A.B. in History of Art and East Asian Studies from Brown University.
Research Interests include modern and contemporary Japanese art, cinema, and visual culture. Schoneveld explores tensions between local and universal modes of cultural production, focusing on topics such as the Shirakaba Group's role in Japanese modernism, women directors like Naomi Kawase in global cinema, and transnational dialogues between Japan and France. Her work emphasizes exhibition practices, pedagogical strategies, and the impact of globalization on artistic movements.
Publications and Projects cover a range of topics: Shirakaba and Japanese Modernism (Brill, 2019) establishes a critical framework for modernist collectives, while articles analyze Kawase Naomi's films, Rodin's influence on Shirakaba, and preservation challenges in East Asian art. Her research has been supported by grants from the Japan Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Luce Foundation, and others.
