Erin Nelson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Guelph, where she maintains an active research and teaching profile focused on sustainable food systems and agroecology. Her work spans both Canadian and Latin American contexts, with particular emphasis on knowledge-exchange mechanisms that build capacity for agroecological production and enhance community wellbeing.
Dr. Nelson's research interests center on sustainable food systems, agroecology, community development, and community-engaged scholarship, with a regional focus on Latin America. Her work examines how knowledge-exchange can build capacity for agroecological production and how agroecology contributes to ecological resilience and community wellbeing. As a community-engaged scholar, she collaborates extensively with civil society organizations and farmer networks, and has developed agroecology-based educational programs with Cuba's National Institute of Agricultural Sciences.
Her recent publications (2020-2023) demonstrate a consistent focus on agroecology knowledge networks, farmer-led research, gender perspectives in agricultural innovation, and digital transformation in local food systems. These works reveal her commitment to examining both practical applications and theoretical frameworks for sustainable food system transformation, with particular attention to community-based solutions and knowledge co-creation.
Dr. Nelson actively supervises graduate students in Sociology and International Development, including Abena Offeh-Gyimah, Bradley Ross, and Natalia Ruiz Cuartas. Her community-university partnership approach to research has resulted in numerous collaborative publications and projects focused on food security, organic certification systems, and community food initiatives.
