Dr. Bush's research centers on American conceptions of criminality, institutions of punishment, and reform in the 'long' 20th century, with a strong emphasis on how gender, race, class, and sexuality shaped legal and social control. Her work explores eugenics, juvenile justice, and Progressive-era paternalism, particularly in the American South. She also specializes in digital research methods, including data analysis and data ethics.
Her recent publications span journals such as Current Research in Digital History, Southern Cultures, and The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, with a 2023 article winning the William M.E. Rachal Award. These works collectively reflect a deep engagement with digital methodologies, archival recovery, and the intersection of race, gender, and state power in historical contexts.
