Dr. Erin Eggleston is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Middlebury College, specializing in molecular microbial ecology. She joined the faculty in 2017 and leads the Eggleston Lab, focused on microbial diversity in aquatic systems, including cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs), coral reef microbiomes, and extremophilic archaea. Her work integrates molecular techniques with field studies, addressing environmental justice and public health implications.
Education: PhD in Microbiology from Cornell University (2015), Hewson Laboratory. Previous roles include Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Lawrence University and adjunct roles at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Sage College.
Teaching includes courses on Ecology & Evolution (BIOL 0140), Microbiology (BIOL 0310), Molecular Microbial Ecology (BIOL 0365), and senior seminars on Extremophiles (BIOL 0449). She also teaches Advanced Field Biology (BIOL 0371) and First-Year Seminar (FYSE 1560).
Research funding includes USGS grants for Lake Champlain CHAB studies and NOAA Sea Grant for community knowledge integration. Collaborations include projects on T. gondii exposure in traditional foods and mercury methylation in river wetlands. Her lab emphasizes equity through the Microbes and Social Equity group.
Key projects: Lake Champlain winter microbial dynamics, coral holobiont resilience, and extremophilic archaea adaptations. Students collaborate on fieldwork and lab analyses, with recent work presented at conferences like PVMS and M2P2.
