Dr. Erin Abner is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Kentucky's College of Public Health. She holds joint appointments at the UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and the Department of Biostatistics. Her research focuses on the epidemiological links between medical conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes) and cognitive impairment/neuropathology, with a strong emphasis on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Dr. Abner has authored/co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and leads NIH-funded grants, including roles in the NIH/NIA Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
Dr. Abner teaches graduate-level courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, such as Advanced Research Methods and Causal Inference. Her work integrates clinical, genetic, and biomarker data to advance understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. She co-leads the Data Management and Statistics Core of the Alzheimer’s Disease Center and collaborates on projects addressing social determinants of health and decentralized clinical trial design.
Her research highlights include studies on PTSD's longitudinal cognitive impacts, genetic risk loci for dementia, and the role of gabapentin in cognitive decline. Dr. Abner also investigates vascular contributions to Alzheimer's pathology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches across epidemiology, biostatistics, and neurology.
