Erika Kihlman is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in Latin at Stockholm University's Department of Romance and Classical Studies within the Faculty of Humanities. She has been working at the university since defending her PhD in Latin in 2006 on medieval commentaries on sequences. Since January 2014, she has served as a senior lecturer in Latin and was appointed associate professor in August 2015.
Her research focuses on Medieval Latin, particularly textual philology and text criticism, with specialization in commentaries related to medieval teaching and educational culture. She has developed methods for publishing texts with unstable transmission showing great variation, especially sequence commentaries from the mid-14th century. Her work often intersects with the study of medieval Swedish scholars at foreign universities, particularly in Vienna during the 15th century.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent focus on editorial methodology for non-authoritative medieval texts, with particular attention to sequence commentaries and the textual transmission of educational materials. Her research demonstrates expertise in both philological techniques and historical context of medieval scholarly practices, with emphasis on how texts were adapted for teaching purposes across different manuscript traditions.
Erika Kihlman has supervised doctoral student Robin Wahlsten Böckerman, whose dissertation examined Ovid in the twelfth-century schoolroom. She has participated in significant research projects including "Ars edendi" (2008-2015) and "Swedish scholars at foreign universities during the Middle Ages" (2007-present), where she produced biographical work on Bero Magni and edited his testamentary book list.
She serves in various academic roles including as Sweden's representative in the International Committee of Medieval Latin, on the advisory board for the "Texter till tiden" project, and as a committee member for publication series including Studia Latina Stockholmiensia and Toronto Medieval Latin Texts. She is also active in the Center for Medieval Studies at Stockholm University.
