Erik Smith is an Assistant Research Professor at the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences, University of South Carolina. He also serves as Manager of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR). His work bridges molecular neuroscience and environmental science, focusing on cellular mechanisms of axon regeneration, RNA biology, and pain pathways in neurological disorders.
Research interests include the role of stress granules (e.g., G3BP1), mRNA transport/translation dynamics, and RNA-binding proteins (e.g., nucleolin) in nerve repair. His studies also address pain modulation in conditions like sickle cell disease, particularly interactions between endothelin and apelin systems.
Smith’s findings highlight intra-axonal molecular processes limiting regeneration and therapeutic targets for neuropathic pain. He collaborates with marine and biomedical research groups, leveraging the Baruch Marine Field Lab for interdisciplinary studies.
