Erik P. Lillehoj, PhD is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His research focuses on mucosal immunology, particularly the role of MUC1 mucin in host-pathogen interactions with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Helicobacter pylori. He has maintained continuous research activity since the 1980s with over 185 publications to his name.
Dr. Lillehoj received his B.S. in Microbiology/Chemistry from the University of Illinois (1972-1976), followed by a Ph.D. in Immunology from Wayne State University (1976-1981). He completed post-doctoral training in Immunogenetics at NIAID, NIH (1981-1986).
His research interests span immunology, microbiology, and protein chemistry, with a particular focus on mucosal immunology at airway and gastric surfaces. His work has established MUC1 as a critical receptor for P. aeruginosa and demonstrated its anti-inflammatory properties in host defense mechanisms. More recently, his research has explored the role of sialidases (particularly NEU1) in regulating MUC1 function and host responses to pathogens.
Analysis of Dr. Lillehoj's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the molecular mechanisms of MUC1 function, particularly its role as a decoy receptor against P. aeruginosa through NEU1-mediated desialylation. His work bridges basic science with potential therapeutic applications for lung infections and inflammatory conditions. The research spans multiple disciplines including microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and pulmonary medicine.
Dr. Lillehoj has received notable scientific recognition including the American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (1981) and the American Lung Association Dalsemer Award (2002). His work has been supported by various funding sources including NIH grants, University of Maryland Ventures Seed funding, and the Stanley Medical Research Institute.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lillehoj has maintained active roles in research mentorship, peer review, and institutional committees. He has served on the University of Maryland School of Medicine Council (2006-2010) and the Institutional Review Board (2010-present). He has also been an ad hoc reviewer for NIH study sections and several prominent journals including the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology.
Dr. Lillehoj's laboratory work has primarily focused on airway epithelial cell biology, investigating the molecular interactions between MUC1 and pathogens, signaling mechanisms, and the role of sialidases in regulating these processes. His team has made significant contributions to understanding how MUC1 functions as both a receptor and a signaling molecule in mucosal immunity.
