Erik Knight is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research focuses on the interplay between social hierarchies, stress, and health, with a particular emphasis on hormonal and inflammatory mechanisms. Knight holds a PhD from the University of Oregon and leads the Social Psychoneuroimmunology Lab. His work explores how biological factors like testosterone and cortisol interact with social status, cognitive decline, and health disparities, particularly in aging populations. Key themes include the bidirectional relationships between hormones, inflammation, and mental/physical health outcomes. Recent studies investigate biomarkers of stress resilience, cognitive decline prediction via EEG metrics, and the role of endotoxemia in gender-specific cognitive performance. Methodologically, his research employs randomized controlled trials, longitudinal designs, and mobile health technologies to assess real-world behavioral and physiological responses.
Educational Background: PhD in Psychology, University of Oregon.
Research Interests:
- Psychoneuroimmunology and its applications to stress-related disorders
- Hormonal modulation of social behavior and decision-making
- Biosocial risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment
- Gender differences in inflammatory responses and cognitive function
His recent work demonstrates innovation in linking acute stress responses (via smartphone-based measurements) to autonomic nervous system activity, as well as exploring how fasting impacts endocrine and inflammatory biomarkers in older adults. The laboratory also investigates interventions targeting diet quality in underserved populations, reflecting a commitment to translational research addressing health equity.
