Erik Christiansen is Professor of History at Rhode Island College (RIC), where he also serves as the Coordinator of the Public History Program. He teaches undergraduate courses spanning U.S. history from colonial times to the present, as well as specialized classes in public history and American culture on film.
His research concentrates on American cultural history, with particular attention to how Americans have understood and used the past in politics, media, and public life. He has authored Channeling the Past: Politicizing History in Postwar America and a history of Rhode Island College itself, and is currently investigating the origins of the first U.S. refugee law and American society during the 1930s–1940s.
Under his leadership, the Public History Program offers undergraduate certificates, graduate certificates, and a BA track that emphasize experiential learning through internships at regional historical sites and museums. The program is closely affiliated with RIC’s ongoing North Burial Ground Project, a community-engaged initiative that provides students hands-on public-history experience.
