Professor Erich Round is a British Academy Global Professor of Linguistics at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the Department of Literature and Languages. His research focuses on morphological and phonological modeling, language change, and computational approaches to linguistic diversity. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Yale University and a MA in Swedish from the University of Melbourne. Round leads the Surrey Morphology Group, which has pioneered open data initiatives in language diversity research.
His work bridges theoretical linguistics with computational methods, emphasizing quantitative tools for analyzing linguistic patterns. Notable projects include the REVOLUPHON (Rational Evolutionary Phonology) ERC Consolidator project and contributions to phylogenetic comparative methods in linguistics. He is a co-developer of tools like glottoTrees and phyloWeights, which support phylogenetic analysis and typological research.
Recent grants include an £8m ERC Synergy Grant exploring language evolution and a £1.7m project examining human vs. AI language capabilities. Current PhD supervision includes John Hutchinson on the topic of univerbation's impact on paradigms.
Round’s research integrates historical linguistics, computational modeling, and typological analysis, with a focus on Australian languages and cross-linguistic patterns. His contributions have advanced understanding of phonological and morphological universals, as well as the role of analogy in inflectional systems.
