Professor Erica Wood AO is a leading academic and clinician in transfusion medicine and haematology at Monash University. She holds dual roles as Head of the Transfusion Research Unit and Co-Director of the Division of Acute and Critical Care in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Her work focuses on blood transfusion practices, haemovigilance, and clinical trials in blood disorders. She is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow and leads the Blood Synergy research program, supported by major grants. Internationally, she co-chairs the WHO Advisory Group on Blood Regulation and serves on multiple global committees, including those for transfusion medicine and haemovigilance. Her research encompasses registries for conditions like sickle cell disease, aplastic anaemia, and lymphoma, supported by NHMRC, the Medical Research Future Fund, and industry partners. Key awards include the inaugural Fiona Stanley Prize (2020) and Officer in the Order of Australia (2023). She also practices as a Consultant Haematologist at Monash Health and holds an honorary role at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Research interests span transfusion practices in critical care, cost-effectiveness of immunoglobulin therapies, and improving blood management strategies. Over 293 publications and 113 active projects reflect her prolific output in clinical, economic, and translational research. Awards also include the AABB Fenwal Award and Churchill Fellowship. Her contributions to global health policies and education are evident through leadership roles in organizations like the International Society of Blood Transfusion and ANZSBT.
Recent work includes studies on tranexamic acid efficacy in bleeding patients, economic impacts of sickle cell disease, and international guidelines for transfusion practices. Grants and collaborations emphasize translational outcomes, such as optimizing blood use and patient-centered care. The Transfusion Research Unit's registries and trials drive evidence-based improvements in transfusion medicine globally.
