Erica Sandlund is a Professor of English at Karlstad University, specializing in Conversation Analysis (CA) to study social interaction in educational and organizational contexts. Her research focuses on oral proficiency assessment, multilingual classrooms, and workplace communication. She holds a PhD in English Linguistics from Karlstad University (2004) and a Master's in English and Psychology (1999). Previously, she served as an Associate Professor at Uppsala University's Department of Pedagogy (2018–2019). She leads the Tell-ability project (Swedish Research Council, 2023–2025), exploring storytelling as a life skill in language education. She is affiliated with the ROSE research group and the Center for Language and Literature Didactics (CSL), where she also serves on the board.
Her teaching includes applied linguistics courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, with a focus on supervising doctoral students. Collaborations with schools and educational organizations emphasize practical applications of her research. Notable grants include the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond-funded study on public apologies post-#MeToo (2020–2022) and the STAGE project on starting age and extramural English learning.
Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing equity in language assessment, translanguaging pedagogy, and teacher training. She regularly publishes in journals like Language Testing and Journal of Pragmatics, and her book Testing Talk (2024) examines oral proficiency assessment methodologies.
