Erica L. Sanchez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas, within the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Her research focuses on Kaposi's Sarcoma Herpesvirus (KSHV), particularly the viral G Protein-Coupled Receptor (vGPCR), and its role in metabolic regulation, signaling, trafficking, and host-pathogen interactions. She mentors undergraduate and graduate students and teaches microbiology.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Washington (2016) and a BS from the University of California, Davis (2009).
Dr. Sanchez's research centers on the molecular mechanisms by which KSHV vGPCR modulates host cell functions. Her lab investigates how vGPCR influences cancer metabolism, innate immunity, protein-protein interactions, and transcriptional regulation in endothelial cells. Using molecular biology and tissue culture models, her team explores vGPCR trafficking, paracrine signaling via extracellular vesicles, and metabolic dependencies in viral infection.
The recent publications reflect a strong focus on viral hijacking of cellular metabolism, with recurring themes in metabolic reprogramming during viral replication and latency. Articles span virology, molecular signaling, and metabolic pathways, particularly glycolysis, glutaminolysis, and gluconeogenesis regulation.
- Lifetime Member, SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science)
- Faculty Advisor, UTD SACNAS Chapter
Dr. Sanchez actively mentors students and promotes diversity in STEM. She leads a research group that engages undergraduates and graduates in projects related to virology and molecular pathogenesis. Her lab is supported by ongoing research initiatives, and she contributes to broader scientific community efforts, including mental health advocacy in STEM. The Sanchez Lab maintains an active website and professional presence through ORCID and Twitter.
Her lab, accessible via ericasanchezlab.com, investigates host-pathogen interactions with a focus on KSHV, endothelial cell biology, and metabolic dysregulation in viral oncogenesis.
