Erica Benner is a political philosopher and historian of ideas currently affiliated with the Hertie School for Governance in Berlin, LSE Ideas in London, and academic programs in Sweden and China. She holds advanced degrees (M.Phil and D.Phil) from Oxford University and has previously taught at Oxford, the London School of Economics, Warsaw University, and the Polish Academy of Sciences. Benner is also President of the European Society for the History of Political Thought and a founding editor of the Brill series History of European Political and Constitutional Thought.
Her research focuses on democratic challenges, nationalism, global ethics, and leadership. Her publications, including five monographs, explore themes like Machiavelli’s philosophy, the paradoxes of democracy, and the evolution of nationalism in Europe. Notably, her 2017 book Be Like the Fox received critical acclaim, including shortlisting for the Elizabeth Longford Prize and being named a BBC Book of the Week.
Benner’s work spans political theory, historical analysis, and policy-relevant scholarship. Her publications reflect a broad engagement with political philosophy, ethical governance, and democratic resilience. She has received fellowships at Yale University and Central European University, further underscoring her academic contributions.
