Erica Baffelli is Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Manchester, specializing in contemporary Japanese religions. Her research examines religious minorities, media representations of religion, emotional dimensions of religious belonging, and new religious movements in Japan. Baffelli leads major research projects including 'Fear and Belonging in Minority Buddhist Communities' funded by Leverhulme Trust.
Publications explore the intersection of technology and religion, emotional communities within Buddhist groups, and post-Aum Shinrikyō religious landscapes. Baffelli has held visiting positions at Toyo University, Norwegian Academy of Science, and Ochanomizu University. She serves as editor for publications on Japanese religions and religious authority.
