Eric Wommack is a Professor of Environmental Microbiology at the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Delaware. He also serves as Associate Vice President of the Research Office and is affiliated with the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, Marine Biology and Biochemistry Program, and Biological Sciences department.
- Education: Ph.D. in Marine Estuarine Environmental Sciences (1998, University of Maryland-College Park), M.S. in Physiology (1990, University of St. Andrews, Scotland), B.S. in Biology (Honors) and B.A. in Economics (1987, Emory University).
His research focuses on viral ecology, investigating the abundance, diversity, and activity of dsDNA viruses in ecosystems such as agricultural soils, coastal marine environments, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, poultry production houses, and human-associated microbial communities. His work bridges environmental microbiology and computational biology through viral metagenomics.
Professional roles include Co-Editor-in-Chief of Microbiome, Editor of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and editorial board membership for the International Society for Microbial Ecology Journal and Environmental Microbiology. He is active in the American Society for Microbiology, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, and International Society for Microbial Ecology.
