Dr. Heather Fullerton is an Associate Professor at the College of Charleston's School of Science and Mathematics. She earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.S. from the University of Washington. Her office is located in the Rita Hollings Science Center (Office 229) at 58 Coming Street in Charleston.
Her research explores microbial dynamics in marine ecosystems, with emphases on:
- Metabolic diversity and ecological interactions in marine habitats
- Hydrothermal vent microbial community development
- Macroalgae-associated microbiota
- Charleston-area water quality and antibiotic resistance
Her publications (2022-2024) predominantly investigate coastal microbial contamination, deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems, and biogeographical patterns of extremophiles. Recurring themes include antibiotic resistance in urban floodwaters, Zetaproteobacteria ecology, and methodological innovations in microbial community analysis.
Awards:
- Michael J. Auerbach Award for Excellence in Student Mentored Research (School of Science and Mathematics, 2022)
