Eric Walters is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the College of Pharmacy and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University. He joined the College of Pharmacy Faculty Leadership Team in 2009 and has been a faculty member since 1991, teaching courses in molecular cell biology, medical biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.
Dr. Walters' educational background includes:
- BS in Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin, 1974
- PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, 1978
- Postdoctoral studies, Chemistry Department, Indiana University
His research program is centered on computer modeling of proteins and computer-aided drug design. Current projects include the application of drug design methodology to anti-viral drugs (particularly HIV protease inhibitors), mechanisms of sweet and bitter taste transduction, and modeling of potassium channels and citrate transporters. He employs molecular mechanics, dynamics, and electronic structure calculations to gain molecular-level insights.
Analysis of Dr. Walters' recent publications shows a consistent focus on medicinal chemistry, especially in HIV drug development. His collaborations, particularly with Purdue University on HIV protease inhibitors, have led to significant contributions including the discovery of darunavir. Additional research areas include taste transduction, ion channels, and transport proteins, demonstrating interdisciplinary work across biochemistry and pharmacology.
Dr. Walters collaborates with Professor Arun Ghosh at Purdue University, Professor Henry Sackin, and Professor Ron Kaplan. His research has resulted in over 90 scientific papers, four books, and two patents.
