Eric Salathé is Professor and Division Chair of Physical Sciences at the University of Washington Bothell's School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. He also holds an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Department of Atmospheric and Climate Science at UW Seattle. He earned his Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University and a B.A. in Physics from Swarthmore College.
His research focuses on regional climate change impacts on natural and human systems, specializing in:
- High-resolution regional climate modeling (MM5 system)
- Statistical downscaling techniques
- Extreme weather events (floods, heat waves)
- Land-surface processes and soil parameterization
- Climate impacts on hydrology, agriculture, and air quality
His recent publications analyze warming patterns in Pacific Northwest extreme events using regional climate models and observational data, highlighting accelerated warming during heat events compared to median days.
Teaching interests include climate science, applied mathematics, atmospheric physics, and computational physical modeling. He currently teaches courses such as:

Dr. Salathé leads the Pacific Northwest Regional Climate Model project and collaborates with UW's Climate Impacts Group. His work has been featured in Popular Science and Grist regarding regional climate preparedness.
