Eric R. Anson, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology and Department of Neuroscience at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD). He holds joint appointments in these departments, reflecting his interdisciplinary research focus on vestibular rehabilitation and balance disorders. Dr. Anson earned a Master’s in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University (2003), a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland (2015), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (2015–2017).
His research interests include the effects of vestibular disorders on gaze and postural control, aging vestibular physiology, and clinically accessible assessments of vestibular perception. His work has been funded by the NIH and the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research. Key grants include projects on virtual reality interventions for balance training and novel paradigms for treating vertigo.
Dr. Anson’s scientific awards include the Doctoral Scholar Award (2015) and Dean’s Scholar Award (2015). His lab, the Anson Lab, focuses on translating research into clinical practice, with ongoing studies on self-motion perception and fear of falling in older adults. Collaborators include experts in neurology, audiology, and biomechanics.
He advises students such as Edward Chen (Masters in Immunology, Harvard). His lab is located at 601 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY, and maintains active research partnerships with institutions like the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.
