Dr. Eric Pulis is an associate professor of biology at Northern State University, where he coordinates student research and advises the NSU Environmental Club. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Coastal Sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, an M.S. in biology, and a B.S. in fisheries and wildlife biology from the University of North Dakota.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Coastal Sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi
- M.S. in Biology from the University of North Dakota
- B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from the University of North Dakota
Dr. Pulis specializes in parasitology, focusing on the ecology, evolution, and diversity of parasites in wildlife and fish. His research integrates fieldwork, microscopy, and molecular methods to describe new species and construct phylogenetic hypotheses. He has also contributed to marine mammal and turtle conservation, particularly through studies on stranding patterns and ingestion of fishing gear.
Dr. Pulis’s publications highlight his interdisciplinary work in parasitology and marine conservation. His studies on pygmy killer whales and bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico, sea turtles, and helminth parasites in ducks and amphibians demonstrate expertise in combining ecological modeling, molecular techniques, and taxonomic discovery. Recent work emphasizes biodiversity, host-parasite dynamics, and environmental impacts on marine species.
Advising: Dr. Pulis mentors students as the advisor for the NSU Environmental Club, promoting hands-on research and conservation initiatives. He teaches courses such as Invertebrate Zoology, Vertebrate Zoology, and General Biology II, integrating his fieldwork experience into laboratory courses.
