Eric Plemons is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Arizona's School of Anthropology. His work focuses on the politics and practices of transgender medicine, particularly facial feminization surgery and the ethical and institutional challenges surrounding transgender healthcare. He leads the Medical Anthropology Concentration and Certificate Programs and is affiliated with the Institute for LGBT Studies and the Department of Gender & Women's Studies.
His research engages theories of gender, science studies, and political economies of medicine. Notable publications include *The Look of a Woman* (2017), which won the Ruth Benedict Book Prize, and articles examining transgender surgical access in Catholic hospitals and the use of discarded tissues post-surgery. His current projects explore institutional responses to trans healthcare demands and re-evaluations of surgical outcomes.
Awards include the 2017 Ruth Benedict Book Prize. He teaches courses on medical anthropology, gender studies, and sociocultural theory. His interdisciplinary work bridges anthropology, medicine, and transgender studies, emphasizing embodied practices and institutional knowledge production.
