Eric Perlmutter serves as a CEA Research Director at the Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies (IHES), where he conducts foundational research in theoretical physics, particularly in the domains of conformal field theory and quantum gravity via the AdS/CFT correspondence.
His academic journey began with a PhD in physics from UCLA, followed by prestigious postdoctoral appointments at the University of Cambridge, Princeton University, and Caltech. He then transitioned to a permanent research position at the Institut de Physique Théorique (IPhT) of CEA Saclay, and currently continues his work as a CEA researcher stationed at IHES.
Perlmutter's research program centers on the intricate relationship between conformal field theories in diverse dimensions and quantum gravity. He investigates the space of conformal field theories, especially those with a large number of degrees of freedom, to uncover their role in describing simple gravitational theories. His methodologies draw from spectral modular group theory and the universality properties of random matrices, aiming to explain the chaotic behavior of black holes from a microscopic perspective.
His significant recognition includes:
- ERC Starting Grant (2020) for the project 'Scattering Strings and Other Things: A Modern Approach to Quantum Gravity and the Conformal Bootstrap'
Perlmutter actively contributes to the theoretical physics community through his research at IHES, where he is part of the vibrant environment for advanced studies in mathematics and theoretical physics, collaborating with leading scientists in string theory and quantum gravity.
