Eric Paul Bennett

Eric Paul Bennett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Odontology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He serves as Head of the Section for Oral Biology and Immunopathology and leads research at the Copenhagen Center for Glycomics. With over 30 years of academic experience, his work bridges fundamental glycobiology with cutting-edge genome editing technologies.

Bennett's primary research focuses on Glycobiology, particularly the identification and function of glycosyltransferase genes (glycogenes). His work has evolved from cloning over 30 human glycosyltransferase genes to developing precision-engineered isogenic cell models using CRISPR/Cas9 and related technologies. He has pioneered novel methodologies for improving targeting efficiency and indel detection in genome editing, with significant translational potential for biotechnology and therapeutic applications. His research demonstrates how glycans control fundamental biological processes including phosphate homeostasis, skeletal mineralization, and cancer development.

Analysis of Bennett's recent publications reveals a strong trajectory toward precision genome editing applications in glycobiology. His work consistently addresses the technical challenges of CRISPR/Cas9 systems, particularly in detection and quantification of editing outcomes. The research spans fundamental glycobiology, cancer mechanisms, and technical innovations in genome editing methodologies, showing increasing interdisciplinary integration between these fields.

Bennett has supervised over 20 PhD, Bachelor, and Master students along with more than 6 technicians. He has secured significant research impact with an H-index of 49 (2019) and over 8,800 total citations.

Bennett leads the Oral Biology and Immunopathology section and has founded or co-founded multiple biotechnology companies including Glycozyme Aps (1999), GeCo Aps (2015), GlycoDisplay Aps (2016), and CoboTechnologies Aps (2017). He serves on several scientific boards including the Danish Society for Biotechnology and the NIST Genome Editing Consortium.
