Eric P. Mumford is the Rebecca and John Voyles Professor of Architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, with courtesy appointments in art history and archaeology, as well as history. His academic career spans decades of research and teaching focused on architectural history and urbanism, particularly examining modern architecture within historical and geographical contexts.
Professor Mumford's research focuses on several key areas:
- History and theory of modern architecture, with deep expertise in CIAM (International Congresses of Modern Architecture)
- Urban history from the 19th century to present
- Midcentury metropolitan and environmental design contexts
- Regional architectural histories, especially St. Louis
- Comparative studies of influential architects including Le Corbusier, Tadao Ando, and I.M. Pei
His scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with how urban design evolved as a discipline, the cross-cultural transmission of modernist architecture, and the specific architectural legacy of St. Louis. Mumford employs rigorous archival research to analyze designers' intentions and their built outcomes across different historical periods.
Professor Mumford has received significant scholarly recognition:
- 2023 Residency at the prestigious Getty Research Institute
- 2021 Global Incubator Seed Grant from McDonnell International Scholars Academy for the "Edges of Privacy" housing research project
- 2013 Fulbright Specialist Award for teaching urban planning at Pontifica Universidad Católica del Perú
Currently, Professor Mumford serves as an advisor to the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Humanity's Urban Future committee and is a steering committee member of the Genealogies of Urban Design Network. He recently completed the "Edges of Privacy" research project (2021-24) as co-principal investigator with Mónica Rivera.
Professor Mumford is also an active curator, having co-organized the 2024-25 exhibition "Design Agendas: Modern Architecture in St. Louis, 1930s-1970s" at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and previously curated "Ando and Le Corbusier" at Chicago's Wrightwood 659 Gallery (2018).
