Eric Matthys is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research spans both experimental and numerical studies in Energetics and Fluid/Thermal Sciences, focusing on energy systems, fluid mechanics, and transport phenomena.
Research Interests: His work includes developing concentrated solar thermal systems, bioreactors for algal biodiesel production, and improving HVAC efficiency and ship hydrodynamics. He also investigates fundamental aspects of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics and heat transfer, particularly drag-reducing fluids in turbulent flow and active control of convective heat transfer. Additional projects involve rheological studies of micellar self-assembly in complex fluids, biological fluids like marine polymers, and transport phenomena in manufacturing processes such as rapid solidification of molten metals and shape-controlled deposition of organic materials.
