Prof. Dr. Eric Leif Meggers is a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, where he leads the Meggers Research Group focused on Chemical Biology. He has been a faculty member since 2007, following an assistant professorship at the University of Pennsylvania (2002–2007). His research spans asymmetric catalysis, sustainable chemistry, and catalyst design, with a particular emphasis on chiral-at-metal catalysts.

Prof. Meggers' research focuses on developing novel strategies in asymmetric catalysis, particularly through the design of chiral-at-metal catalysts where the metal center serves as the sole stereogenic and reactive center. His group has pioneered the use of such catalysts in asymmetric photocatalysis, electrochemistry, and enantioselective nitrene chemistry. Recently, the lab has expanded into sustainable iron-based catalysis, supported by an ERC Advanced Grant.
His recent publications highlight trends in iron and cobalt catalysis, enantioselective C-H functionalization, photoredox and electrochemical methods, and amino acid synthesis. These works demonstrate a strong focus on efficiency, sustainability, and stereocontrol in synthetic methodology.
Among his scientific honors are an ERC Advanced Grant and the NHU-CJC Award for outstanding contributions to chemistry.
Prof. Meggers mentors a vibrant research group including postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and master’s students. His group has produced numerous high-impact publications and has contributed significantly to the field of organometallic catalysis and chemical biology. The Meggers Lab also engages in collaborative research, technology transfer (evidenced by European patent applications), and public dissemination of science through YouTube videos and poster presentations.
The research is conducted within the Meggers Laboratory, part of the Department of Chemistry at Marburg, equipped for advanced synthetic and analytical work in asymmetric organometallic catalysis.
