Eric L. Hinton serves as Associate Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and Department Head of the Department of Music at Susquehanna University, where he conducts the University Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Stadium Band while teaching trumpet, conducting, and brass methods courses.
His educational credentials include a Ph.D. from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and both Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Northwestern University, reflecting deep expertise in performance and pedagogy.
Professor Hinton's scholarly focus centers on conducting methodology, with pioneering work applying Rudolf von Laban's movement theory to wind ensemble direction. His research integrates:
- Expressive gesture analysis in orchestral conducting
- Historical evolution of wind orchestra literature
- Brass pedagogy techniques for ensemble settings
- Interdisciplinary connections between dance and music interpretation
He founded and directs the High School Wind Ensemble Institute, a summer residential program advancing wind performance education. Under his leadership, Susquehanna ensembles have performed at College Band Directors National Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and National Association for Music Educators conferences, demonstrating exceptional artistic achievement.
Notable professional engagements include conducting the Pennsylvania All-State Concert Band (2009) and the U.S. Army Europe Band in Germany's 'Hands Across the Sea' series. His book Conducting the Wind Orchestra: Meaning, Gesture and Expressive Potential (Cambria Press, 2008) remains a significant contribution to conducting literature.
