Eric J Crighton is a Full Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Arts. He holds an adjunct appointment at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and directs the Health and Environment Analysis Lab (HEALab). His research focuses on environmental and geographic influences on human health, particularly children’s health, with emphases on environmental risk perceptions, socio-environmental determinants of disease, and environmental health education.
Education:
- PhD in Geography, McMaster University (2006)
- MA in Geography, McMaster University (2000)
- BA (Honours Geography), University of Ottawa (1995)
Research Interests: Dr. Crighton’s work integrates geospatial methods with public health, exploring topics such as air pollution exposure, asthma epidemiology, maternal and child health equity, and climate change impacts on Arctic communities. His research bridges environmental science, social determinants of health, and participatory knowledge translation.
Key Contributions: Over 70 peer-reviewed publications address environmental health disparities, including landmark studies on ultrafine particulate matter and childhood asthma (2019–2020), maternal aeroallergen exposure (2017), and spatial epidemiology of congenital heart defects (2019). Recent work examines pandemic impacts on vulnerable populations and water security in the Canadian Arctic.
Labs/Initiatives: Director of HEALab, a multidisciplinary team analyzing geospatial health data. Collaborates with ICES on large-scale population health studies. Leads knowledge translation projects to bridge academic research with community action.
