Eric C. Hoover, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland. He directs the Hearing Technology Laboratory, focusing on improving hearing aid efficacy through studies of values and measurement metrics in fitting and validation. He holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University (2015) and a BA from UC San Diego (2002).
His research interests include hearing aid technology, speech perception in noise, psychoacoustics, and audiological best practices. He has published extensively on topics ranging from psychophysical testing methodologies to the ethical implications of over-the-counter hearing aids.
Recent work emphasizes time-efficient auditory assessment methods like the Portable Automated Rapid Testing (PART) system and adaptive testing protocols. His studies often explore how clinical practices align with professional values, particularly regarding accessibility and patient-centered care.
Dr. Hoover teaches courses on hearing aids, aural rehabilitation, and industrial noise problems. He advises students like Katherine Menon, whose work contributes to his lab's research portfolio.
His lab develops innovative tools for auditory testing while addressing challenges in modern audiology, including remote testing and OTC device impacts on traditional practice.
