Eric Danquah is an Adjunct Professor at Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science (Plant Breeding and Genetics Section), concurrently serving as Professor of Plant Genetics at the University of Ghana and Director of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI). He earned his PhD in Genetics from the University of Cambridge after completing an MPhil in Plant Breeding at Cambridge and a BSc in Agriculture (Crop Science) at the University of Ghana.
His research focuses on:
- Genetic diversity analysis in staple crops
- Application of biotechnologies for crop improvement
- Integration of farmers' knowledge into breeding programs
- Development of stress-resistant varieties for African agriculture
His extensive publication record demonstrates strong emphasis on molecular breeding techniques, participatory research approaches, and genetic solutions for crops including cassava, maize, rice, sorghum, and yam. Recent works particularly address climate resilience, nutritional enhancement, and yield optimization under abiotic stresses.
Awards and honors include:
- Africa Food Prize (2022) for transforming African farming
- GCHERA World Agriculture Prize (2018)
- Multiple University of Ghana Distinguished Service Awards
- Fellowship of Cambridge Philosophical Societies
- Commonwealth Academic Fellowship
As WACCI Director since 2007, he oversees training of plant breeders across West/Central Africa and manages collaborative initiatives like the Africa Yam Project. He previously directed the University of Ghana's Biotechnology Centre (2014-2019) and maintains affiliations with the University of Western Australia and international agricultural research consortia.
