Eric Cueny is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Boston University's College of Arts & Sciences, with affiliation to the Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). His research focuses on sustainable chemistry via organometallic catalysis, leveraging waste plastics and CO₂ for synthesizing commodity chemicals and materials. He joined BU in 2022 after postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania’s CHASE Energy Innovation Hub.
Education: PhD in Chemistry (University of Wisconsin–Madison, 2019), BS in Chemistry (Wayne State University, 2012).
Research interests emphasize developing novel catalysts for waste-to-chemical conversion. His work combines experimental and analytical techniques like chromophore quench labeling to study polymerization mechanisms and catalyst activity. Key areas include transition metal catalysis (hafnium, ruthenium), chain transfer dynamics, and sustainable material synthesis.
Publications span 2012–2024, with a focus on alkene polymerization, catalyst design, and mechanistic studies using advanced analytical methods. His group actively explores applications in renewable energy materials and circular chemical systems.
Advising: Currently mentoring graduate students in the Cueny research group. Grants supported by DOE and other energy innovation initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Cueny Group at BU, collaborating with CHASE Hub researchers on solar energy and liquid fuel technologies.
