Eric Brown is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Microbial Biology and leads the Biomedical Discovery and Commercialization (BDC) program, which bridges scientific research with commercialization. His research focuses on bacterial survival strategies, particularly targeting drug-resistant superbugs through chemical biology and molecular genetics. Dr. Brown is affiliated with the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research and serves on multiple national/international advisory boards and editorial roles.
His research interests include understanding bacterial cell wall biogenesis (e.g., wall teichoic acids), antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and developing novel antibiotics using innovative screening platforms. He has pioneered approaches like nutrient stress-based drug discovery and outer membrane disruption strategies.
Dr. Brown’s scientific awards include the Canada Research Chair. His work spans over 300 publications, with recent breakthroughs in identifying resistance-modifying agents and cryo-EM studies of antibiotic targets. He co-leads the McMaster Antibiotic Resistance Network and has contributed to startups through the Professor Entrepreneur Fellowship.
Labs/Teams: Brown Lab (www.brownlab.ca) focuses on microbial systems biology and translational antibiotic discovery. He mentors students in the BDC program, emphasizing entrepreneurship and biomedical innovation.
