Professor Eric Blair holds the position of Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Leeds, where he has served since 1981. His career spans roles as Lecturer (1981), Senior Lecturer (1988), Reader (1996), and Professor (2008). He also acts as an academic advisor to the University of Malaya and has held a Visiting Professor role at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
- Education: BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Edinburgh, PhD from the University of Warwick.
- Postdoctoral research at Aarhus University (Denmark) and Uppsala University (Sweden).
Dr. Blair's research focuses on small DNA tumour viruses, including adenoviruses, papillomaviruses, SV40, and polyomaviruses, which are critical for studying cell transformation, cell cycle control, and tumour formation. His work explores adenoviruses as therapeutic vectors for diseases like cystic fibrosis and cancer, emphasizing their mechanisms of immune evasion through repression of MHC class I antigen presentation. These studies aim to identify new targets for eradicating cancer-causing viruses.
His students, such as Rohana Yusof (Deputy VC at University Malaya, now DVC at UCSI University) and Paula Lam (Head of Special Projects at CellVec Pte Ltd), highlight his influence in both academia and industry. Dr. Blair contributes to student education through lectures, practicals, and seminars on cancer biology, molecular virology, and gene technology. He serves on the Masters Taught Student Education Committee and Undergraduate School Taught Student Education Committee, and is the School Director of Taught Student Education.
