Eric Beinhocker is a Professor of Public Policy Practice at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, and the founder and Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) at the Oxford Martin School. He also serves as a Supernumerary Fellow in Economics at Oriel College and an External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. His interdisciplinary work bridges economic theory, complexity science, and practical policy applications to address pressing global challenges.
Beinhocker earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management. Prior to his academic career, he spent 18 years at McKinsey & Company as a partner with leadership roles in Strategy, Climate Change and Sustainability, and the McKinsey Global Institute. This industry experience informs his pragmatic approach to economic policy.
His research spans complexity economics, economic paradigm change, climate policy, financial stability, and economic inequality. Beinhocker's work challenges traditional equilibrium-based economic models, instead applying complexity theory to understand economic systems as dynamic, evolving networks. He has pioneered the application of agent-based modeling to economic problems, collaborating with central banks and policymakers on practical applications.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of climate policy, economic systems, and social contracts. His work demonstrates how technological and economic forces driving the clean energy transition have reached a point of irreversibility. He has examined how financial regulations may inadvertently impede climate action, analyzed the psychological foundations of rising populism, and explored innovative approaches to welfare economics.
As author of 'The Origin of Wealth: The Radical Remaking of Economics and What It Means for Business and Society,' Beinhocker has significantly influenced the field of complexity economics. His work regularly appears in major publications including the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Times, the Guardian, The Atlantic, and the Washington Post.
Under Beinhocker's leadership, INET Oxford has developed multiple research initiatives including Climate Econometrics, Complexity Economics, Economics of Sustainability, and Economics, Inequality & Opportunity. These programs address critical challenges such as low-carbon development pathways, energy innovation policy, financial system resilience, and the drivers of economic inequality through interdisciplinary collaboration.
