Rafael Carranza

Rafael Carranza is an Assistant Professor at the School of Government (Escuela de Gobierno) at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He holds a PhD in Social Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), an MRes in Economics from University College London (UCL), and an MSc in Economics from Universidad de Chile. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Research Officer at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School (INET Oxford) and the Department of Social Policy and Intervention (DSPI) at the University of Oxford, with an associate membership at Nuffield College.

His research focuses on the causes and consequences of economic inequality, including intergenerational mobility, distributional analysis, and the measurement of wellbeing. Key areas of interest include the impact of economic inequality on growth, the transmission of advantage/disadvantage across generations, and labor market dynamics in emerging economies. Recent work examines the long-term effects of job loss on earnings inequality in Chile, revealing stark disparities in recovery rates between low- and high-earning workers.

Carranza’s academic contributions span peer-reviewed journals, working papers, and policy analyses. His work bridges theoretical insights with empirical rigor, often employing advanced quantitative methods to address policy-relevant questions. He collaborates with institutions like INET Oxford and COES, and his publications frequently explore Latin American contexts, particularly Chile.
