Eric Baratay is a Professor of Contemporary History at Jean Moulin University - Lyon 3 and a Senior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) since 2017 (renewed in 2022). His transdisciplinary research focuses on the history of animals, plants, and human-non-human relationships, pioneering methods in historical ethology.
Baratay's work examines animal behaviors, emotions, and cultural adaptations through sources from the 18th to 21st centuries. His innovative approach redefines non-human historiography by centering animal subjectivity and interspecies dynamics.
His publications emphasize feline cultures, animal biographies, and wartime animal experiences. Recent works analyze behavioral plasticity and agency in domesticated species, blending archival research with ethological insights.
