Pascal Edouard

Pascal Edouard is a University Professor and Hospital Practitioner in sports medicine physiology at Saint-Etienne University Hospital and Jean Monnet University. He has served as a University Hospital Assistant (2011-2013), University Lecturer and Hospital Practitioner (2013-2020), and was appointed University Professor in 2020. He currently leads the Sports Medicine Unit within the Department of Clinical Physiology and Exercise and heads the SPIP team (Sports Performance and Injury Prevention).

Dr. Edouard's research focuses on two primary axes: prevention of injuries in athletics using epidemiological and interventional approaches in collaboration with national and international athletics federations, and prevention of hamstring muscular injuries linked to sprinting through a multidisciplinary approach combining anatomy, epidemiology, imaging, biomechanics, modeling, and data science. His work has significant implications for athletic performance and injury prevention strategies.

His publication record includes 93 articles in SIGAPS indexed journals and 70 in non-indexed journals as of January 2021. His research contributes to the FULGUR program (€1.9M ANR grant) focused on sports performance and injury prevention for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. His main contributions include establishing that hamstring muscle injuries are predominant in athletics championships, identifying the fundamental role of hamstring muscles in horizontal force production for sprint performance, advocating for multifactorial and individualized hamstring injury rehabilitation, and demonstrating that regular exercise-based prevention programs reduce injury occurrence in athletics.

Dr. Edouard directs the SPIP research team and contributes to the FULGUR research program with 30 researchers funded by the French National Research Agency. His work bridges clinical practice with academic research, focusing on translating scientific findings into practical applications for athletes and sports medicine practitioners.
