معرفی
Erdal Yiğit is an Associate Professor in the Physics & Astronomy Department at George Mason University. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from University College London (2009). His research focuses on planetary atmospheres, particularly gravity wave effects in Earth and Mars climates, and he developed the first whole-atmosphere gravity wave parameterization for planetary GCMs. His work has earned the 2016 Zeldovich Medal for studying atmospheric coupling mechanisms.
Yiğit’s teaching includes courses in classical mechanics, planetary atmospheres, and space weather. His research spans atmospheric and space sciences, with contributions to understanding Mars’ thermosphere dynamics and Venusian ionospheric variations. He has authored Springer’s two-volume monograph series on 'Atmospheric and Space Sciences.'
Key research areas include Martian dust storm impacts on atmospheric escape, solar flare effects on thermospheric-ionospheric systems, and hurricane-induced vertical coupling. He collaborates with NASA missions like MAVEN and ICON, analyzing satellite data (e.g., NGIMS, MIGHTI) to validate models of atmospheric dynamics.
His awards include the Zeldovich Medal, recognizing his role in advancing planetary atmosphere coupling studies. Yiğit’s work bridges observational data and computational models, addressing critical questions in Earth and planetary climate systems.
