Eoin McLaughlin is a Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, with a secondary affiliation to the Edinburgh Business School. His research focuses on economic history, sustainability metrics, and Irish socio-economic dynamics, with a particular emphasis on historical cooperatives, microfinance, and demographic patterns. He has published extensively since 2013, contributing to journals like European Review of Economic History, Business History, and Risk Analysis.
His work integrates long-term sustainability analysis, including genuine savings estimates and planetary boundaries frameworks, alongside studies of Ireland’s economic challenges, such as the Great Famine and post-independence industrial policies. Collaborations include cross-national comparisons of Danish and Irish dairy cooperatives, as well as analyses of Galapagos National Park tourism economics.
McLaughlin’s research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining economic history with environmental and demographic data. His recent work explores how historical crises (e.g., pandemics, famines) inform modern policy, and he advocates for inclusive wealth metrics to guide sustainable development. He is an active PhD supervisor and contributes to debates on weak sustainability and anthropocene economics.
