Enzo Lippolis

Enzo Lippolis was a Full Professor of Classical Archaeology at Sapienza University of Rome, serving as Director of the Department of Ancient Sciences from 2012 until his sudden passing on March 3, 2018. His leadership contributed decisively to the Department's rise to first place globally in classical studies (QS 2018 ranking). He was renowned for his teaching in Greek Archaeology across undergraduate, graduate, and specialization programs, as well as his role in the Archaeology PhD program.

• Directed excavations in Larino, Saturo, Pompeii (Italy), and Gortyna (Crete).
• Former Director of Taranto Archaeological Museum (1989-1995) and Marzabotto Etruscan Museum (1995-2000).
• Produced over 200 publications blending innovative methodologies with rigorous scholarship, covering archaeology of worship, urban topography, and socio-economic analyses through ceramic studies.

Recipient of the Accademia dei Lincei Career Award (2005), he was celebrated for institutional dedication, intellectual balance, and collaborative spirit. Colleagues across Sapienza's Faculties praised his strong leadership and approachable personality.
