Enrique Mateos Naranjo is a Professor in the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Seville, where he conducts research on salt marsh ecosystems, invasive species management, and ecological restoration. His work integrates field studies with laboratory experiments to address environmental challenges in coastal wetlands.
His research focuses on halophyte physiology and plant-microbe interactions, particularly examining Spartina densiflora invasions in Doñana National Park and Guadalquivir estuary. Key projects investigate bioremediation of heavy metal-polluted soils using native halophytes, carbon sequestration dynamics in wetlands ($$\text{CO}_2$$), and climate change impacts on estuarine ecosystems. He employs ecophysiological techniques to study plant responses to combined stressors including salinity, heavy metals, and nutrient limitations.
Recent publications (2022-2023) reveal a strong emphasis on applying plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to enhance plant resilience in degraded environments. Major themes include developing biofertilizers for sustainable agriculture, understanding halophyte adaptation mechanisms, and creating restoration tools for contaminated wetlands through plant-bacteria synergies.
Mateos-Naranjo leads multiple research initiatives funded by Spanish national programs (e.g., PID2021-124750NB-I00), European Union (TED2021-131605B-I00), and regional agencies. His projects frequently involve interdisciplinary collaborations addressing ecological restoration, invasive species control, and sustainable resource management.
As a core member of the Functional Applied Ecology Research Group (GEFA), he directs fieldwork in Andalusian salt marshes and maintains international partnerships with institutions in Portugal and Argentina for wetland conservation research.
